Ronaldo hunts more goals in Germany

Ronaldo hunts more goals in Germany

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Champions League's top scorer this season with 13 goals, can add to his tally and extend his record against German clubs in the knockout stages at Wolfsburg.

The 31-year-old is currently four short of matching his record in a Champions League season ahead of Wednesday's quarter-final, first leg, at the German league club with the return next Tuesday at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese star is on a rich run against Bundesliga sides and has found the net in all of the last six knockout ties played against German clubs in the Champions League.

It started back in the 2011/12 semi-finals when he bagged a brace against Bayern Munich as the Bavarian giants went on to suffer heartbreak in the final at home to Chelsea.

In the 2012/13 campaign, he netted against Borussia Dortmund as the German side reached the final at Wembley when they lost to Bayern.
But in the 2013/14 campaign, when Real achieved 'La Decima', he notched a total of seven goals across the home and away meetings with Schalke, Borussia and Bayern.

Then last season, he claimed three goals in the last-16 tie against Schalke in a 5-4 aggregate win, netting twice in the shock 4-3 defeat in Madrid having also scored when Real won 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen.

A home Champions League quarter-final against Ronaldo and Real is a dream tie for the Wolfsburg squad, who are without a win in their last three games.

"You can only be impressed with Cristiano Ronaldo," said Wolfsburg's Germany international Julian Draxler.
"Just look at the way he has performed over the years and the goals he has scored.

"Of course, you always follow the progress of a player like him.
"We hope we can keep him at bay as much as possible over the two games.
"But at the end of the day, this is about Wolfsburg versus Real Madrid, not Wolfsburg versus Ronaldo."

Messi denies tax evasion in Panama Papers scandal

Messi denies tax evasion in Panama Papers scandal

The family of Lionel Messi denied on Monday that he was involved in tax evasion after the Barcelona star emerged as one of many personalities accused of shady offshore dealings in the Panama Papers scandal.

"The Messi family wants to make clear that Lionel Messi has not carried out any of the acts attributed to him, and accusations he created a... tax evasion plot, including a network of money-laundering, are false and insulting," it said in a statement.

The scandal erupted on Sunday when media groups made public a year-long worldwide investigation into a trove of 11.5 million documents leaked from a Panama-based law firm that exposed a tangle of offshore financial dealings by the elite.

Among the accused are close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin, relatives of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Iceland's Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson as well as sports celebrities and screen stars.

Messi and his father are named as owners of a Panama company that had not previously been disclosed during a Spanish probe into their tax affairs.
"The Panama company to which they refer to is a totally inactive company that never had any funds or any open current accounts," the Messi family said.

They added that the firm was created by the family's former tax advisers and that everything had since been brought into line where Messi's fiscal situation was concerned.

FIFA boss implicated in Panama Papers

FIFA boss implicated in Panama Papers

The signature of new FIFA president Gianni Infantino has cropped up in the so-called “Panama Papers” in connection with questionable TV rights sales in South America, the German newspaper behind the mass leaks reported on Tuesday.

Swiss-Italian lawyer Infantino, 46, succeeded the suspended Sepp Blatter in February as the head of FIFA, which is reeling from the arrests of leading officials last year, as well as the clouds over the awardings of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively.

In his then-post as head of UEFA’s legal department, in 2006 and 2007 Infantino signed TV rights contracts for Champions League and other football tournaments with a letterbox company headed by two men who are now defendants in the FIFA scandal, reported the Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

But Infantino denied any wrongdoing in a statement sent to AFP.

“I am dismayed and will not accept that my integrity is being doubted by certain areas of the media, especially given that UEFA has already disclosed in detail all facts regarding these contracts,” said Infantino.

“From the moment I was made aware of the latest media enquiries on the matter, I immediately contacted UEFA to seek clarity. I did this because I am no longer with UEFA, and it is they who exclusively possess all contractual information relating to this query.
“In the meantime, UEFA has announced that it has been conducting a review of its numerous commercial contracts and has answered extensively all media questions related to these specific contracts.

“As I previously stated, I never personally dealt with Cross Trading nor their owners as the tender process was conducted by Team Marketing on behalf of UEFA.

“I would like to state for the record that neither UEFA nor I have ever been contacted by any authorities in relation to these particular contracts.
“Moreover, as media themselves report, there is no indication whatsoever for any wrongdoings from neither UEFA nor myself in this matter.”
The two men who owned the company Cross Trading are Argentinian TV rights dealers Hugo and Mariano Jinkis, who have both been accused in the FIFA scandal by US investigators.

The father and son team are accused in the US of having bribed FIFA and other football officials to be able to cheaply acquire TV rights and then sell them at inflated margins.

In the rights deals signed with Infantino for UEFA, their company had also made huge profits, said the report-buying the rights for a total of $140,000 (123,000 euros) and selling them on for $440,000.

The transactions “raise the question: Why did UEFA sell the TV rights obviously well below value?”, asked the paper.
The report said FIFA, UEFA and Infantino, its former general secretary, had repeatedly denied having ever had any business dealings with Hugo and Mariano Jinkis.

Then, when confronted with the signed contract in late March, UEFA had confirmed to the newspaper that the contract indeed bore Infantino’s signature.
Sueddeutsche Zeitung said it was told by UEFA that the organisation did not know at the time who were the real owners of Cross Trading.
The so-called Panama Papers, a massive leak of 11.5 million documents about secret offshore financial dealings implicating world leaders and celebrities, has prompted several countries to open investigations.

Messi trial dates altered for Copa America

Messi trial dates altered for Copa America

Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi's trial for tax fraud has been reset to its initial start date of May 31 after an earlier change in the schedule threatened his participation in June's Copa America in the United States.

The initial decision to delay the start of the trial till June 7 would have seen Messi at least miss Argentina's opening group game against reigning champions Chile in Santa Clara, California, on June 6.

However, a judicial source said on Wednesday that the trial would start as scheduled on May 31 after a "misunderstanding" regarding the dates without offering further details.

Messi and his father Jorge have been charged with tax fraud for allegedly failing to declare 4.16 million euros ($4.74 million) in taxes related to his image rights between 2007 and 2009 through front companies in Belize and Uruguay.

The pair also released a statement on Monday fiercely denying further claims of tax evasion after Messi was one of a series of high-profile names accused of shady offshore dealings in the Panama Papers scandal.

Spanish prosecutors are seeking a jail sentence of 22-and-a-half months for the five-time World Player of the Year.
However, any such sentence would likely be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences carrying a sentence of less than two years.

UEFA headquarters searched in 'Panama Papers' case

UEFA headquarters searched in 'Panama Papers' case

Swiss police on Wednesday searched UEFA's headquarters for contracts linked to a Champions League television rights deal revealed in the so-called "Panama Papers", which involves FIFA's new president Gianni Infantino.

"UEFA can confirm that today we received a visit from the office of the Swiss Federal Police acting under a warrant," the European football confederation said in a statement sent to AFP.

It added that police requested "sight of the contracts between UEFA and Cross Trading (and) Teleamazonas," two of the companies involved in the sale of broadcast rights in Ecuador for the 2006 to 2009 Champions League finals.

Infantino was the head of UEFA's legal department at the time and signed the contracts.

Arsenal defender Gabriel says Gunners can ‘definitely win the Premier League’ this season

Arsenal defender Gabriel says Gunners can ‘definitely win the Premier League’ this season

Successive wins in the league and all appears well once again in the Arsenal camp.
Despite victories over Everton and Watford, the Gunners still sit eight points behind leaders Leicester – which could be stretched to 11 should the table toppers defeat Southampton later today.
Chasing top spot is now Arsenal’s only focus this season having recently exited both the Champions League and FA Cup.
And while it would take an extraordinary and monumental swing of results to see Arsene Wenger’s men go on to lift the title for the first time since 2004, Gabriel is refusing to give up hope.
‘The team are now very excited with the last two wins in the league, which were two difficult games, but we’re all thinking positively that we can win,’ the defender is quoted as saying in a report run.
‘We’re also hoping for some fault on Leicester and Tottenham’s part and if we carry on the way that we have been lately, that we can definitely win the league.’
Gabriel has every right to feel confident, for Arsenal are notorious for finishing campaigns strongly, but whether they can pull off the unlikeliest of championship wins with just seven games left to play remains to be seen.

Chelsea join Arsenal and Liverpool in transfer race for Andriy Yarmolenko

Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly the latest clubs to join the chase to sign Dynamo Kiev forward Andriy Yarmolenko.
Arsenal, Liverpool, and Everton are also interested in the 26-year-old, according to the daily mirror.
The Ukraine international has caught the eye of the Premier League clubs with ten goals and six assists in 19 league games this season.
Rated at £25 million, the number of sides interested in the player could cause a bidding war for his services.
National team boss Mykhaylo Fomenko has even urged yarmolenko to move to the primier league, and he could get his wish this summer.
